Penn State York fell to the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Sunday, Jan. 7 by a score of 70–63. University of Maine at Fort Kent was the #4 ranked team in the last USCAA Division I coaches poll, while Penn State York was ranked #7 in Division II.
Penn State York built an eight point lead midway through the first half, in part behind Davy O'Leary's eight first half points. The sophomore from Dunboyne, Ireland went 4-5 in 10 first-half minutes off the bench. Fort Kent, however, was able to retake the lead and go into halftime up by six.
York briefly tied the game early in the second half and then twice got within one point of Fort Kent, but was unable to retake the lead after a four-minute scoring drought put Fort Kent up by 15 with seven minutes to play.
The two teams were evenly matched statistically, both shooting about 40% from the field. York pulled down 36 rebounds to Fort Kent's 35, York had 21 assists to Fort Kent's 19, and York turned the ball over 13 times to Fort Kent's 12.
Junior Richard Grant (Susquehannock) led Penn State York with 15 points, while sophomores Khalil White (Cheltenham) and Joey O'Dwyer (Dulaney) scored 12 and 11, respectively.
With the non-conference loss, Penn State York falls to 8–4 overall and looks forward to hosting Penn State Mont Alto at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12 as Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference play resumes.
