Men's Basketball Defeated By Penn State York

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball fell to PSUAC opponent Penn State York on Tuesday.

Both teams traded baskets during the first five minutes of action until an and-one play sparked a 7-0 York run with 14:41 left in the first half, giving them a 14-6 advantage. Consecutive unanswered baskets by Makhi Jones (Harrisburg, PA / Susquehanna Township High School) narrowed the gap for Schuylkill and made it a two-possession contest.

With York leading 19-10 and looking to extend their lead to double digits, Kyrie Edwards (Winchester, CA / Vista Murrieta High School) would stop their run with a made basket at 11:04. Edwards would remain aggressive as he drove to the basket on the next play, finishing through the foul to bring Schuylkill within five.

Trailing 28-16 with 6:01 to play, Schuylkill would go on a 15-8 run to close the half, with Antwuan Byrd (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt High School) and Dashawn Dixon (Baltimore, MD / Catonsville High School) scoring 10 of the 15.

York extended their lead to double digits at the beginning of the second half and held on to that margin during the first five minutes of the half. A steal and score by Jamel Anderson (Brooklyn, NY / Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School) kickstarted Schuylkill's second-half run. Possession later, as Devin Adams (Baltimore, MD / Kenwood High School) guarded a larger defender in the post, he would force the turnover and hit a corner three-pointer on the other end to bring Schuylkill's deficit to 52-45. A putback by Byrd and a pair of made free throws by Jones made it a three-point ball game with 13:45 remaining.

York continued to hit shots as they stretched their lead back to double digits with 11:30 remaining. Schuylkill managed to shrink their deficit to as few as seven, but York was able to hold on to their lead, ultimately securing the victory. Byrd led Schuylkill with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Jones finished with 13 points. Dixon tallied 10 points and 9 rebounds. Adams and Amir Gray (Washington, DC / Quince Orchard High School) scored 8 points each while Gray came up with 4 steals.

Schuylkill (10-14 overall, 7-7 PSUAC) will return to action on Saturday, February 10th as they host PSUAC opponent Penn State Scranton. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
