Brandywine Bounces Back To Top York

MEDIA, Pa. -- After receiving its first conference loss of the season three days earlier, the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team rebounded to defeat Penn State York by a score of 50-27 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions limited York to 3-31 shooting in the opening half en route to grabbing a 22-9 lead through 20 minutes.

Fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City), Brandywine moved in front 12-4 after one period. The Lions held York without a point for nearly seven minutes, swelling the lead to 18 points before York netted the final five points of the half to get within 13.

Brandywine scored 11 of the first 15 points of the second half, moving the margin to 20 points. York got as close as 16 down, but a triple from Madison Michael (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) to end the period made the score 41-22 heading to the final stanza.

Another seven-minute scoring drought for York enabled the Lions to extend the advantage as large as 48-22 on Michael's layup with three minutes to go before the visitors netted five of the final seven points to settle the final margin.

Michael tallied eight points and seven rebounds, while Velez topped all scorers by netting 12 points.

Brandi Johnson (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) added nine points and five rebounds and Nicolette Napoleon (Springfield, Pa./Penn Charter) topped the Lions with 14 rebounds.

Brandywine held York to 14 percent shooting (8-55) and forced 21 turnovers, scoring 16 points off York miscues.

The Lions (9-6, 6-1 PSUAC) go for a season sweep of Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM.
