The Penn State Schuylkill women's basketball team faced their first PSUAC setback on Tuesday night, falling 69-61 in a fiercely competitive matchup against Penn State York at the Ruhl Center.
Schuylkill started strong, controlling the pace early and holding a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Behind the play of Serena Jones, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Ava Novak, who added 12 points and 9 boards, Schuylkill battled to maintain their edge through the first half.
Despite a 37-28 halftime advantage, Penn State York surged back in the second half, spearheaded by a phenomenal performance from Delaney Burroughs, who tallied a game-high 30 points. York's sharpshooting from beyond the arc, hitting 7 of 17 attempts (41.2%), proved to be a decisive factor in the game.
The Lions' offense was further fueled by Nadia King's all-around contributions with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Tajae Stevenson added 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. However, Schuylkill struggled with turnovers, committing 20 giveaways that York capitalized on for 17 points.
In the final quarter, Schuylkill fought valiantly, but York's late-game execution sealed the win. The visitors held Schuylkill to just 6-of-18 shooting in the fourth quarter while securing clutch free throws to maintain their lead.
Penn State Schuylkill will look to bounce back on Friday night when they host PSU Fayette at 6 PM in another PSUAC showdown.
