Baseball Sweeps Top Ranked Penn State York

YORK, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Baseball swept PSUAC opponent Penn State York on Saturday.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State York 1

Active first inning for Schuylkill, beginning with a walk by Connor Licklider (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School). Licklider went on to steal second base before Owen Zimmerman (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) advanced to first base after a walk. Schuylkill loaded the bases up as Brenan Adams (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) advanced on a hit pitch.

Schuylkill then caught fire at bat as Kyle Kaminski (Lodi, NJ / Saint Mary High School) singled in runs for Licklider and Zimmerman. Next batter up was Ethan Naftzinger (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) who singled on a line drive to left field to bring Adams home. Owen Shoop (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School) then doubled to center field to give Schuylkill two additional runs, ending the inning with five total.

Four scoreless innings before a sac fly by Licklider brought home Chris Duffy (Perkasie, PA / Lansdale Catholic High School). York scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth following a single.

Shoop and Kaminski finished with two RBIs each while Shoop hit a double. Jared Sterner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) pitched in 5.1 innings, winning his matchup.

Game Two: Penn State Schuylkill 4, Penn State York 3

Schuylkill would be the first team on the board in the second matchup as a double by RayJay Marmolejos (Wyomissing, PA / Wilson High School) ultimately led to a run as Nate Gilbert (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) singled him in.

Licklider and Zimmerman hit consecutive singles in the top of the third. A double by Gilbert drove in a run for Licklider, extending Schuylkill's lead to 2-0. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame gave York their first run of the contest.

Schuylkill scored their third run of the contest in the top of the fifth following consecutive singles by Zimmerman, Gilbert, and Adams. York knotted the game at 3-3 after a single and a sac fly in the bottom of the frame.

Zimmerman singled to start the seventh inning and would make it to home base following walks by Adams and Kaminski, and a wild pitch. With York positioned at third base in the bottom of the seventh and looking to even the score with two outs, Zimmerman completed the strikeout to clinch the win for Schuylkill.  

Gilbert and Zimmerman both finished 3-4 at bat while Gilbert added two RBIs. Gilbert, along with Marmolejos added doubles for Schuylkill. Zimmerman pitched in 1.2 innings on the mound, winning his matchup.

Schuylkill (16-9 overall, 7-3 PSUAC) will host Penn State York on Sunday.
