Brandywine Tops York 60-53 For First Win

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Penn State York by a score of 60-53 during the Penn State University Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night.

Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) combined for 11 of Brandywine's first 12 points as the Lions ran out to a 12-2 edge through five minutes.

Floyd's triple extended the margin to 11 points with under one minute to play in the first period; however, the Lions were limited to one made field goal over the next 10 minutes as York trimmed the Brandywine lead to just 21-19.

A free throw from Floyd with 58 seconds to go before halftime ended a three-minute scoring drought. Erin Michael (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) followed with a three-point play and Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) beat the buzzer with a layup to send the Lions into the break with an eight-point advantage.

Consecutive triples from Floyd and Watson early in the third period swelled the lead to double figures. Four minutes later, Cheyenne Rivas (Thorndale, Pa./Collegium Charter) sank a layup that gave Brandywine its largest lead of the quarter at 39-27. York countered with nine of the next 11 points, but two Floyd free throws made the count 43-36 through three quarters.

York was within four when Rivas canned a jumper with 5:46 to play in regulation. She would score the Lions' next eight points, including a pair of three-pointers during a span of 70-seconds, helping to put the game away for Brandywine.

Rivas finished with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Floyd tallied a team-best 20 points. Allen added nine points and Watson chipped in with seven.

Michael led the rebounding effort for the Lions with a career-high 16 rebounds, while Allen pulled in seven boards and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) notched eight rebounds and five assists.

Floyd collected a game-high five steals and Watson tallied four thefts for the Lions, who forced 18 turnovers.

Brandywine (1-1, 1-0 PSUAC) continues conference play Saturday against Penn State Lehigh Valley on the road at 6:00 PM.
