Women’s Basketball Splits Two During Weekend Tourney

Penn State York Women's Basketball opened the 2018–19 season with a couple of non-conference matchups during a trip to the Davis College Tip-Off Tournament. Traveling to Johnson City, New York, outside Binghamton, York defeated Mid-Atlantic Christian Friday evening before falling to Davis College on Saturday.

63–43 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian on Friday, November 9

In Friday's matchup, York caught fire in the second half against Mid-Atlantic Christian, turning a two-point half-time deficit into a twenty-point win. Sky Warner (Red Lion / Brogue, Pennsylvania) lit up the gym from distance, making 6 of 11 from behind the arc.

Charizma Johnson (West York / York, Pennsylvania), Janelle Kress (Littlestown / Littlestown, Pennsylvania), and Ashton Ball (Spring Grove / East Berlin, Pennsylvania) all scored 10 points in the team effort.

Johnson dished out six assists to go with six rebounds and three steals, while Kress was perfect from the free throw line and Ball grabbed nine rebounds.

The two teams will square off again January 10 in York.

62–56 loss to Davis College on Saturday, November 10

On Saturday, Penn State York carried a lead through most of the game into the fourth quarter before fatigue and perhaps inexperience caught up with the team. Davis College outscored York 20–10 in the final quarter to come out on top 62–56.

Johnson led York with 17 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds. Warner scored 11 points and Kress just missed a double-double, with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Ball scored 9 points and also pulled down 9 rebounds, while Danielle Jackson (William Penn / York, Pennsylvania) recorded a game-high 12 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.

As a team, Penn State York out-rebounded Davis, 47–34, but struggled with 19 turnovers.

Penn State York's home opener is Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. against NCAA Division III University of Valley Forge. The team then plays an away game at HACC before opening the PSUAC regular season at home against Penn State Wilkes-Barre on November 27 at 6:00 p.m. All home games are held in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center Gym on the Penn State York campus, and are free and open to the public.
