Women’s Basketball Opens Season at Davis College Tournament

Penn State York Women's Basketball tips off the 2018–19 season at the Davis College Tip-Off Tournament in Johnson City, New York, outside Binghamton. York first faces Mid-Atlantic Christian at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, with another game on Saturday against an opponent to-be-determined based on the outcome of Friday evening's match-up.

Penn State York fell to Mid-Atlantic Christian in overtime, 92–81, in last year's tournament, then soundly defeated the Mustangs from Elizabeth City, North Carolina in a January game in York, 77–56.

Penn State York looks to build on a 2017–18 campaign, which saw the team secure a #5 seed and return to the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) playoffs, ultimately falling in the first round. with a 12–4 conference record. The team finished the season with a 13–11 record overall, going 9–5 in the conference.

York returns three starters from last season, including senior Charizma Johnson (West York / York, Pennsylvania) who averaged 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 26.6 minutes per game while leading the team shooting 35.5% from three-point range.

Sophomore Corina Rivera (Lancaster Catholic / Lancaster, Pennsylvania) led Penn State York with 29.7 minutes of playing time per game while averaging 11.8 points per game last year, and returns for her second season in the blue and white.

Also returning in a leadership role is sophomore Janelle Kress (Littlestown / Littlestown, Pennsylvania), who played 26 minutes per game last season and averaged 7.2 points.

Penn State York's home opener is set for next Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. against NCAA Division III opponent University of Valley Forge. The team then plays an away game against HACC before opening the PSUAC regular season at home against Penn State Wilkes-Barre on November 27 at 6:00 p.m. All home games are held in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center Gym on the Penn State York campus, and are free and open to the public.
