Women’s Basketball Defeats Mont Alto, Secures #5 Seed

Penn State York Women's Basketball closed out the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) regular season with a 75–70 win on the road at Penn State Mont Alto on Friday, Feb. 9. With their fifth consecutive win, York secured the #5 seed in the PSUAC Playoffs and will travel to face #4 Penn State Schuylkill at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14 in the opening round.

Constantly trying to open up a lead, through the first three quarters Penn State York couldn't find any daylight between themselves and a Penn State Mont Alto team playing for pride. After a back-and-forth first half, Mont Alto managed to build a 7-point lead with 4:11 to play in the third quarter. York then used an 11–2 run to regain the lead, going into the fourth quarter up by just one, 49–48.

Although Penn State York only managed to shoot 33% from the field in the fourth quarter, the team got to the foul line early and often, finding its stroke after struggling to hit free throws earlier in the game. York was 15–21 in the decisive final period, as 15 of its 26 points in the quarter came from the charity stripe.

As a team, York capitalized on 21 Mont Alto turnovers, turning them into 31 points. The team shot 39% from the field, and went 5–15 from distance.

Freshman Corina Rivera (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) scored a game-high 24 points, shooting 8–17, including 2–2 from 3-point range. Rivera also recorded 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Playing her final regular season game, senior Karra Thomason (New Oxford, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) filled her stat line with 19 points on 7–13 shooting, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals, and an assist.

Charizma Johnson (York, Pa. / West York) added 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist, while Sky Warner (Brogue, Pa. / Red Lion) also scored 11 points to go with 3 steals, 2 assists, and a rebound in 27 minutes off the bench.

Finishing the regular season on a five-game winning streak, Penn State York's final regular season record stands at 13–10 overall, and 9–5 in the conference.
