Penn State Schuylkill Sweeps York Basketball

Penn State York Women's and Men's Basketball traveled to Penn State Schuylkill on Monday, Jan. 15 for a pair of Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) games. Both teams came away with double-digit losses which were in reality much closer than the final score lets on.

Women's Basketball Falls at Penn State Schuylkill, 61–49

In the women's game, Penn State York went into the half behind by 12, but managed to momentarily grab the lead near the end of the third quarter. A huge fourth quarter for Schuylkill swung the momentum back in their favor and the home team made 11 of 13 free throws in the last period to seal the win.

Emily Colon and Corina Rivera (both of Lancaster Catholic High School) both scored 15 points for the visitors, while Karra Thomason (Bermudian Springs) pulled down 13 rebounds on a night when the team struggled shooting from the field and the free throw line. Colon and Charizma Johnson (West York) also both grabbed 8 rebounds.

Penn State Schuylkill made 18–24 free throws in the game, and was especially hot from the line in the fourth quarter, while York only managed 8–24.

With the loss, Penn State York falls to 7–8 overall, and 3–3 in the PSUAC. York next hosts Penn State Fayette on Friday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center Gym.

Men's Basketball Tripped Up by Penn State Schuylkill, 93–79

Richard Grant (Susquehannock) and Larry Rascoe (Susquehanna Township) combined for 47 points, but it wasn't enough to beat Kody Jacoby and Penn State Schuylkill Monday evening.

Down by 14 at halftime, York whittled Schuylkill's lead down to 7 with around six minutes to play, and again with only 2:30 to play. Schuylkill however was almost perfect from the free throw line (26–30) and closed out the win by not missing a foul shot in the last 13 minutes of the game.

Schuylkill's Jacoby recorded a monster line, leading all scorers with 41 points, going 14–14 from the line, while also tallying 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals.

Grant scored 20 of his 27 points for Penn State York in the second half before fouling out with 1:24 to play. Rascoe pulled down 8 rebounds to go with his 20 points, 15 of those points coming in the second half. Grant was 11–15 from the field on the night, and Rascoe could hardly miss, going 7–9, including 2–3 from distance.

Khalil White (Cheltenham) added 11 points for the visitors, while Derrick Hoffman (Northeastern) added 9 in 19 minutes off the bench.

Penn State York falls to 9–5 overall, and is now 5–2 in the PSUAC. York travels Wednesday evening for an away game against Central Penn College at East Pennsboro High School, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
