Penn State York Women's Basketball, ranked #18 in the USCAA Division II Coaches Poll, couldn't quite catch #5 Villa Maria on Friday, Jan. 5 in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center Gym, ultimately falling, 81–74.
Down by as many as 14 in the third quarter, York used an electrifying run in the fourth to come as close as three points with four minutes left to play, but Villa's Shaquana Owens hit a few key shots to close out the win for the visitors from Buffalo, New York. Owens led all scorers with 26 points, going 10 of 27 from the field, while also pulling down 12 rebounds and dishing out 8 assists in 40 minutes, as shorthanded Villa only had six players suit up for the game.
Junior Charizma Johnson (West York) led Penn State York with 26 points, while Freshman Corina Rivera (Lancaster Catholic) poured in 17 points and led the home team with 5 assists in 26 minutes on the floor. Senior Karra Thomason (Bermudian Springs) grabbed 15 rebounds to go with 10 points in the losing effort.
With the loss, Penn State York falls to 4–7 overall, with a quick turnaround as the team next hosts Pratt Institute on Saturday, Jan. 6.
