Penn State York Men's Soccer got into the win column for the first time in 2017 in a big way, with a 5–1 victory over visiting Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Carlos Robles-Flores (Mexico City, Mexico / Springville High School) scored a hat trick while Carter Miller (York, Pennsylvania / Dallastown Area High School) recorded two goals and an assist.
Zacharia Sao opened the scoring twenty minutes into the game to put Wilkes-Barre on the board first, and his team managed to hit the post or crossbar on three occasions in the first half alone. After a few periods of sustained pressure, York's Miller outran the last defender and curled a shot from outside the 18-yard box past the goalkeeper in the thirty-first minute to level the score.
The second half was all Penn State York as Miller tallied his second goal just two minutes into the period, then assisted on Robles-Flores' first goal in the sixty-fifth minute. Robles-Flores would add two more goals in the eighty-fifth and eighty-eighth minutes to put the outcome beyond doubt.
On the day, Wilkes-Barre led York in shots, but Maksim Zingman (Minsk, Belarus / Ridgewood) recorded six saves in goal to pick up the win.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre falls to 0–2 on the year, while Penn State York improves its record to 1-3-1 (1-1-1 PSUAC). York hopes to pick up another win when they host Penn State Worthington Scranton on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m. before traveling for an always-tough away match at Penn State Brandywine next Monday.
