On a surprisingly cool late-summer afternoon, Penn State York Men's Soccer was defeated by Chesapeake College in their season opener at home, 3–2, on Friday, Sept. 1. Jonathan Vilca (Rosario, Argentina / San Jose High School) and Christopher Verderame (Hershey, Pennsylvania / Hershey High School) both scored for York, while three first-half goals by the visitors from Maryland's Eastern Shore were enough for the win.

Chesapeake College looked the more dangerous side in the opening minutes, and they were rewarded with a goal before ten minutes were up. York came to life with a few chances on the counterattack, but less than ten minutes later Chesapeake scored again to go up 2–0. After a missed penalty, the home team got on the board in the 35th minute when Vilca made his way through traffic and powered a close-range shot past the goalkeeper.

York seemed to have the momentum, but Chesapeake answered with their third goal just three minutes before the half. Verderame's tally was the lone goal in the second half, leading to the final scored of 3–2.

Penn State York quickly turns its attention to a trip to Penn State New Kensington on Wednesday, Sept. 6, the first Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) game for each team. Both teams finished 4–5 in PSUAC play last season, with York defeating New Kensington 3–1 in the final game of the year.
