Baseball Wins Game 1 With Peters Walk-Off

Game 1:

Penn State Scranton got off to a quick start in Game 1 of the Doubleheader. In the Top of the 1st, Ross Murog (York, Pa. / Dallastown) got into a jam on the mound for Penn State York. After allowing two hits to start the inning, Murog settled to get out of the jam after inducing a pop up and groundball to record the first two outs of the inning. A throwing error on a groundball would allow the first two runs (unearned) to score for Penn State Scranton.

Murog and Vaccaro of Penn State Scranton would then trade zero's until the Bottom half of the 4th inning when Penn State York would score their first run of the game. Brady Lefever (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) would single and Joerick Mercado (York, Pa. / Central York) came in as the courtesy runner. Mercado then stole second base, setting up Brendon Delridge (York, Pa. / York Suburban) for a sacrifice bunt. On the bunt attempt, a throwing error by the pitcher would allow Mercado to score all the way from second and Penn State York got their first run of the game making the score 2-1 in favor of Penn State Scranton.

Penn State Scranton would respond with a run of their own in the Top of the 5th, as a throwing error and a fielding error allowed Murog to give up his third run of the day (unearned) and Penn State Scranton would once again extend their lead to 3-1. In the Bottom half of the 5th, Penn State York would respond as John "JP' Dyson (Hanover, Pa. Southwestern) led the inning off with a double. Jackie Barlow (Manchester, Md.  Manchester Valley) executed a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Dyson to third. Jonny Stratton (Howell, Nj. / Howell) was then hit by a pitch, bringing Lefever to the plate. Lefever would draw a walk on a passed ball which would allow Dyson to score, making the game 3-2 in favor of Penn State Scranton.

In the Top of the 6th, Murog would give up his first earned run of the day as Blockberger drove in Seidita with an RBI single to centerfield. After 6 1/3 innings, Kent Walker (York, Pa. / Red Lion) would come in to relieve Murog. Walker would record two outs and send Penn State York to the plate trailing 4-2 entering the Bottom of the 7th.

In walk-off fashion, Penn State York would begin to chip away at Penn State Scranton's lead. Lefever would double to left, driving in Cory Lytle (Bel Air, Md. Patterson Mill) and advancing Stratton to third, which made the game 4-3. Delridge then came to the plate, driving in Stratton on a sacrifice fly and tied the game at 4-4. On the sacrifice fly, Mercado advanced to third as he was running for Lefever. Scranton would record an out while stranding Mercado at third, bringing Alex Peters (Bel Air, Md. / Patterson Mill) to the plate with two outs and the winning run on third. Peters would hit a missle of a line-drive to right field, walking the game off for Penn State York as Mercado came across to score the winning run.

On The Mound: Murog pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits, 4 runs (1 earned), while striking out four. Kent Walker earned his second win of the year, improving his record to 2-0 after successfully recording two outs in the top half of the 7th.

At The Plate: Avery Penson (York, Pa. / York Suburban), Brady Lefever, and Alex Peters all collected two hits apiece in the contest.
